My favorite sandwich from the happiest place on earth

Tales of the Dinner Belle

By Brenda Stanley

I just spent a week in Grandma Heaven. I got to go to Disneyland with my grandchildren, and part of that trip included a visit to one of my favorite restaurants to enjoy one of my favorite dishes- the Monte Cristo sandwich. No one does it better than the Blue Bayou restaurant in Disneyland. These sandwiches are made with layers of turkey, ham, and cheese that are dipped in batter and then deep fried and served with a dusting of powdered sugar and an ample amount of jam for dipping. They are decadent and deadly and I absolutely love them. I rarely make them at home, but I’ve been able to re-create the recipe well enough that when I want to treat myself, but I don’t have the luxury of another trip to the happiest place on earth, I can create my own little happy place right here in eastern Idaho.

Belle’s Monte Cristo Sandwich

8 slices dense white bread

8 slices turkey

8 slices ham

8 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese (or 4 of each)

1 cup flour

1 egg

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 tablespoon sugar

1 cup water

Vegetable oil for frying

Powdered sugar and jam for serving

Layer one slice of cheese, then 2 slices of ham, then 2 slices of turkey, then one slice of cheese onto each piece of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread. Place toothpicks into all four corners of each sandwich to secure the sandwiches in place.  In a large shallow bowl, mix together the flour, egg, baking powder, sugar and water until smooth.  In a large, heavy skillet, heat an inch of oil to medium high (hot but not smoking). Dredge one sandwich in the batter, making sure all surfaces are covered.  Place it in the oil and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until all sides are browned. Use a combination of spatula and tongs to turn. Place the finished sandwich on paper towel lined plate. Repeat the process with the remaining sandwiches. Remove the toothpicks from the sandwiches. Cut each sandwich in half and dust with powdered sugar.  Serve with strawberry or raspberry jam for dipping.
