A simple but delicious homemade pizza crust
Pizza sales have boomed during the pandemic- which isn’t surprising, given it’s already one of the most popular dishes in America. It’s convenient when you want something delivered or available for carry-out. However, I love making pizza at home.
My homemade pizza crust is what makes a pizza really good, and it’s actually very simple to make. Unlike homemade bread, this dough doesn’t need to rise, so you can have this mixed up and in the oven in minutes. The chewy and light crust can be rolled thick or thin, so make a few and let everyone have their favorite. Kids love creating their own unique pizzas, and with the crust being so simple to make, it will become a fun family DIY dinner.
Belle’s Homemade Pizza Crust
1 cup very warm water (105-110 degrees)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
2 to 2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Grease a pizza pan or large baking sheet and set aside. Place the warm water into a large bowl (I use my stand mixer). Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over top and stir just to moisten. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes foamy. Stir in the olive oil. Add 2 cups of the flour and the salt and mix until a ball begins to form. The dough will still be sticky. Add a little more flour and keep mixing until a ball begins to form. Place the dough onto a floured surface and knead about 5 minutes until the dough is smooth. You can add a little extra flour if needed, but not too much or your crust tough. Roll or stretch the dough into a large circle or two small circles and the carefully place on the baking sheet. Using a fork, gently prick the top of the crust to prevent air bubbles. Bake on the lower rack of a 450 degree oven for 5 minutes and then remove. Poke any air bubbles with a fork. Add your favorite pizza sauce and toppings. Bake on the lower rack of the 450 degree oven for around 20-25 minutes or until the crust is brown and the cheese on your pizza is melted. Let cool a bit before you serve.
